Disturbed by their marginalization in society, a health technology company, Gerocare, has called for improved health insurance for the elderly to reduce the burden of preventable disease and death.
Founder Dr. Ebi Ofrey made the call during a virtual press conference to mark the company’s fifth anniversary, from August 29 to September 2, 2022.
He attributed the heavy burden of preventable disease, deteriorating health conditions and premature death among the elderly to the lack of access to geriatric care.
Elder care should be improved, he said, noting that many Nigerians were losing their parents and elderly to various non-communicable diseases.
He said, “Elderly people in Nigeria are losing their lives to various non-communicable diseases. To address these gaps in health services, Gerocare was established to provide regular home medical visits to seniors to prevent deterioration of their health, maintain a healthy state and improve their quality of life.
“We achieve this by identifying and managing their health issues in a timely manner, thereby not only improving their quality of life, but also providing peace of mind for seniors and their loved ones. »
Also speaking, co-founder Dr. Ajibola Meraiyebu said that subscribers to the company’s platform receive regular and detailed updates on their health status, measures to be taken to prevent illnesses and ways effective in managing their health.
He hinted that the company is working to reach more underserved people and expand its services to Ethiopia and South Africa.
Meraiyebu said his company promotes preventative health care through education and health care, which reminds older people that they are loved, with their well-being first.
On the occasion of the fifth anniversary celebration, the co-founder said that the planned activities reflect the company’s slogan “Care for life”.
He listed some of the programs which include walking and talking about health, dancing for wellbeing and social networking.
