  • Japan’s Ministry of Health begins regulatory approval process for cultured meat

As cultured meat companies around the world await regulatory approval to market their real cell-derived meat, the Japanese government has begun the approval process for the country. The Japanese Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare will form a team of experts to study the safety of cultured meat and its production process.

As first reported by Japan News, the team of experts, as part of efforts to determine the necessary regulations, will be created during this exercise to determine whether there are any risks in the cultivation process that could harm human health. This is one of the first steps towards the commercialization and industrialization of cultured meat in Japan.

Japan’s Food Sanitation Law currently stipulates the methods of production, processing and distribution of meat in Japan, but the ministry has not placed cultured meat under this law and there is a lack of regulatory clarity in followed by producers.
