Kottakkal Arya Vaidya Sala which was established by Vaidya Ratnam PS Varier in 1902 played a major role in the revival of Ayurveda and worldwide recognition of Ayurveda in the 20th century.
The institute, which has been dedicated to the use and promotion of Ayurveda for more than a century, has evolved into a multifaceted therapeutic center. The fact that this health center provides relief to more than eight million patients each year reflects the magnitude of the organization’s goals.
Arya Vaidya Sala owns three pharmaceutical factories in Kottayam, Kanchikode and Nanjangud in Karnataka. Here, about 550 different forms of drugs are produced. Arishtam, arkkam, kashayam, kritham, thailam, tablet, bhasmam, choornam and lehyam are produced effectively. In addition, syrups, granules, tablets, capsules, balms and gels are produced in various formats. Soaps, shampoos, hand cleaners and sanitizers are all part of the process. Modern industrial methods and technologies are used to create medicines. More than 1,800 authorized dealers and 26 branches in India and abroad sell these pharmaceuticals to the general public.
For the production of medicines, Arya vaidya sala has a stock of more than 600 medicines. It also has large herb gardens. The resources needed to manufacture the drug are provided by experienced agencies, tribal communities, governmental and semi-governmental entities, and individuals.
Arya Vaidya Sala consists of four hospital complexes. It has NABH accredited Ayurvedic Hospitals and Research Centers in Kottayam and Delhi as well as an Ayurvedic Hospital and Research Center in Kochi which provides correct and authentic Panchakarma treatments in Kerala. Patients at Kottayam Charity Hospital are provided with free accommodation, treatment, medicine and food. Allopathic treatment is also provided here. Many Indian and foreign patients seek treatment at these institutes.
In addition to pharmaceuticals, therapies and charities, the Arya Vaidya Sala conducts research and studies in the field of herbs, therapeutics, pharmaceutical manufacturing and the science of Ayurveda. Arya Vaidya Sala has an AYUSH accredited quality control laboratory. DST, CSIR, CCRAS. Research on various topics is carried out in collaboration with various institutes of the Government of India. There is a publishing house of scientific books, reports and the quarterly medical journal “Aryavaidyan”. Arya Vaidya Sala also contributes financially to the operations of Vaidyaratnam PS Varier Ayurveda College.
In September 2003, President Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam inaugurated the Center for Medicinal Plant Research (CMPR). Research is conducted in the field of chemical composition, internal structure, classification and tissue culture of herbs.
Apart from this, Arya Vaidya Sala also operates the famous PSV Natya Sangham for the promotion of Kathakali, an art form in Kerala.
The functioning of the Arya Vaidya is carried out under the control and direction of a board of directors composed of seven members.
