A new case study details how the Kentucky-based healthcare system optimized staffing and lowered rates from outside agencies with flexible employment and smart technology.

HAUPPAUGE, NEW YORK, USA, Sept. 15, 2022 / — Hallmark Health Care Solutions (HHCS) – a leading workforce technology company – helps hospitals, healthcare systems healthcare and long-term care facilities to reduce contract labor expenses and hire more clinical staff. The meteoric rise in temp employment for nurses and allied health professionals continues, and hospital and healthcare system leaders need a strategic, cost-effective way to balance labor supply and demand work.

Many are successful in recruiting through an “internal agency” model using smart technology. Example: Norton Healthcare – a six-hospital system with hundreds of healthcare centers in Kentucky and southern Indiana. Norton Healthcare recruited more than 300 clinicians within seven months of launching their redesigned Norton Clinical Agency (NCA) employment models, powered by Einstein II.

Under this new model, Norton Healthcare was able to achieve a 98% fill rate, savings of $30-40 per hour on nurse wages, and a substantial influx of experienced new hires. The Norton Healthcare case study offers insight into how the use of technology can enable provider organizations to compete more effectively with external recruitment agencies.

“The workforce has made it clear what our biggest opportunities are,” said Scott Watkins, vice president of operations at Norton Healthcare. “To bring more clinical staff to the bedside without the high rate differential associated with external contracts, we needed flexible hours and better rate control. With Einstein II, we have both.

The job market rewards them for it. Since launching Strategic Employment Models and connecting staff with smart technology in 2021, Norton Healthcare’s floating pool of clinicians – NCA – has grown 10x. converted to internal resources, and Norton Healthcare leaders now have the visibility and “levers” to adjust rates up and down based on real-time quote volume and rate data of Einstein’s market. II. They’ve also dramatically improved their efficiency and eliminated the risk of overpaying their agency vendors, says Betsy Coomer, BSN, RN-BC, director of the NCA.

For its robust internal agency model, NCA uses the Einstein II internal resource pool and the Einstein II vendor management system, both of which are interoperable with other management systems, including timekeeping and invoicing. By allowing NCA to in-house all aspects of workforce management instead of relying on a third-party managed service provider (MSP), Coomer says Einstein II has unlocked “a line of sight Direct” on all available labor resources, as well as usage, pay rates, and more. This has made administrative tasks more efficient, relationships stronger, and recruiting efforts more effective. All this, in addition to significant savings on labor expenses.

“Clearly, the goal of every healthcare system is to maximize the use of the internal workforce – and that’s exactly what they are currently achieving at Norton Healthcare, as the study by cases,” says Jennifer Firmalan, MSN, RN, vice president of Workforce for Einstein II. “Norton Healthcare’s NCA program is a great example of what it means to listen to the workforce and provide what they need to become part of your internal resource team and make you an employer of choice for top talent. .”
