UNITED STATES: US Department of Health and Human Services Secretary Xavier Becerra announced that the continued spread of the monkeypox virus in the United States has prompted its declaration of a public health emergency. During a press conference, Secretary Becerra said: “Ending the monkeypox outbreak is a key priority for the Biden-Harris administration. The monkeypox virus is part of the smallpox group. It is not as serious and the chances of infection are low. The virus is prevalent mainly in remote areas of Central and West African countries, usually those close to tropical rainforests. However, the spike in the number of people infected with monkeypox outside the African region with no travel links would mean the virus is now spreading in the community.

Symptoms of monkeypox include rashes that can be seen on or near the genitals or anus and other areas like the hands, feet, chest, face or mouth. The rash is said to go through several stages, including scabs; before it heals, the rash initially looks like pimples or blisters and can be very painful or itchy.

Other symptoms of the virus may include fever, chills, swollen lymph nodes, exhaustion, muscle aches and back pain, headache, and respiratory symptoms including sore throat, nasal congestion or a cough.

Symptoms of monkeypox usually begin within three weeks of exposure to the virus. The treatment for the virus so far is smallpox vaccination which has been shown to be 85% effective in preventing the monkeypox virus.
